2018-06-20 | Paper on ArcSIOSE at the XVIII GIT Congress in Valencia

ArcSIOSE paper

The communication aims to disseminate the development of "ArcSIOSE", a set of tools that allow to decode and analyze with the maximum level of detail the data of this cartography on land uses. Finally, as a practical demonstration, the territorial organization of the periphery of a provincial capital will be briefly studied.

The work was presented to the specialized scientific community during the biannual congress of the Geographic Information Technologies Group of the Association of Spanish Geographers, held in Valencia between June 20 and 22, 2018.

2017-12-29 | Developing tools for managing and analyzing land uses in Spain (SIOSE) with GIS


The magazine Geofocus published in the second issue of 2017 the article entitled: "Development of tools for the treatment of information and analysis with GIS of land uses using the SIOSE, an approach to the case of Asturias".

Among its lines, it is developed a set of computer tools executed inside ArcGIS that allow deciphering the SIOSE code and perform different spatial analyzes on land uses. To demonstrate the usefulness of the program with several examples, it is analyzed the visible landscape of the municipal capitals of Asturias (Spain).

The gvSIG Association published in its web site my script written in Python that allows to convert from polygon shapes into polylines and vice versa. Apart of the main purpose, it also keeps the data stored in the attributes table.

The using of the code is free, but it is necessary to cite the author. It is absolutely forbidden to commercialize its contents without a signed authorisation of the owner.

as a consequence of industrial restructuring

I defended my doctoral thesis at the Department of Geography of the University of Oviedo with a jury formed by geographers of international relevance which unanimously awarded the research with "summa cum laude".

Due to the quality of the work, it was granted with the "Award to the best research and GIS project in the academic field" during the 2015 ESRI Spain Conference.

Paper issued on the 90th number of the journal "Ería: revista cuatrimestral de geografía", referenced as one of the best in its field in Spain and accredited with the seal of quality FECYT (Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology) in recognition of its editorial quality.

The aim of the article is to analyze the impact that this facility will have for the territorial development of Asturias, not forgetting the national and international context in which it is framed. The impact on the landscape is approached from different points of view, also highlighting the impact on agricultural activities and the development of roads and railroad.

Book presentation at the House of Culture of Pola de Lena (Asturias), a research who aims to analyze the most important territorial transformations that have taken place in this municipality since Spain joined the European Economic Community in 1986 to the present.

The publication was supported by the Center for Cooperation and Territorial Development (CeCodet), had the support of various government agencies of Asturias, was positively reviewed by scientific journals in the field and had significant repercussions in the regional press.

I worked for several years in this great project of four volumes led by Professor Francisco Quiros and Senior Lecturer Gaspar Fernández.

Here is made a detailed analysis of the historical and geographical evolution of Spain since the 19th century to the present. The cartography is the key element of the work, where it can be found more than three thousand figures of all kinds.

The topics covered are varied, from addressing the grown of the cities, the impact of the mining and energy production; to countryside, the natural landscapes, the industrial areas or the infrastructures.

From 18th to 22nd of September of 2006 took place in Humanities Campus of Oviedo (Asturias, Spain) the "29th National Congress of Young Geographers of Spain" under the title "The critical power of Geography", being responsible of the organization the association of Young Geographers of Asturias (JGA).

The book contains all the submissions by participants, as well as other texts and compilations of images that summarize the major contributions made during the scientific sessions.

Some of the authors of reference to be found in the publication are: Mrs. Josefina Gómez Mendoza, Mr. Francisco Quirós Linares or Mr. Enrique Serrano Cañadas.
