2018-01-29 | Map of land uses in Asturias (Spain) according to the SIOSE of 2011

A few days ago the Geofocus Journal, published by the Geographic Information Technologies Group of the Association of Spanish Geographers, published in its twentieth issue my article entitled "Developing tools for data management and analysis of land uses through SIOSE and GIS. An approach to the case of Asturias".

The article can be read here, through its lines it is described the development of a program able to decrypt the code of each SIOSE polygon. The aim is to collect all the data that can be taken from the labels and present the results tabulated to ease and improve remarkably the management and the analysis possibilities of this source. In addition, with the purpose of demonstrating the practical usefulness, the information obtained has been used to conduct a brief geographical analysis of Asturias that, based on land uses, helps to study the types of landscapes of the region. Article conclusions:

In this article it was intended to develop a tool that automates the decoding of the Information System on Land Occupation of Spain (SIOSE) and that eases the access to the great level of detail that has this fundamental source for the study of land uses in the country. Complementarily, it was sought to exploit the results obtained through the preparation of thematic cartography and to evaluate, later, the possibilities of deepening the geographical knowledge through the development of new analytical tools, taking as the object of study the province of Asturias.

As for the first of the objectives, has managed to create a utility that greatly facilitates the use of SIOSE by implementing a set of tools that transforms the original data into a table with a clear structure, easily readable which also avoids the constant reading of the IGN's technical documentation. As a result, the user obtains as the main practical advantage, a greater ease for the elaboration of thematic cartography, since it is not necessary to carry out additional information processing operations.

Finally, by combining the basic results with the potential of the Geographic Information Systems, more elaborate models of analysis can be configured to broaden the possibilities of study and, therefore, understanding of the geographical reality. The example raised in the article under the name of "landscape perspective" comes to corroborate the usefulness of the tool developed because, thanks to the table that it obtains, it enables multiple applications at state, regional and local level.
